GENDER RULE

Is it a motorcycle brand?
It's always die.

Every motorcycle brand in German is feminine. die Honda, die Yamaha, die Ducati, die Harley. Same logic as car brands, just a different hidden noun, and a different article die.

The rule

Whatever the make, whatever the model, a motorcycle takes die. No exceptions, no checking, nothing to memorize per brand.

Why die

Just like a car brand stands in for der Wagen, a motorcycle brand stands in for die Maschine, the everyday word bikers use for "the bike". Maschine is feminine, and it passes that gender on to whichever brand follows it. The Akkusativ, the Dativ, the possessive, all follow the regular feminine pattern from there.

Same brand, two genders

BMW makes both cars and motorcycles, and German treats the two product lines completely differently. der BMW is the car, because the hidden noun is der Wagen. die BMW is the motorcycle, because the hidden noun is die Maschine. Same three letters, same company, two correct articles depending on what's parked in front of you. For more on why this happens, see how brand names get their gender.

In conversation

Spot a motorcycle brand, and the article is settled before you even reach the noun. die, every time, because the hidden noun die Maschine. And the next time you see der BMW next to die BMW, you'll know exactly why both are right.
