Konjunktiv II.
The hypothetical mood.
German has three grammatical moods: Indikativ, Konjunktiv, and Imperativ. Indikativ describes what is real. Konjunktiv II describes what is not: the imagined, the wished for, the politely hedged, the impossible condition. A small set of forms covers almost every situation where Konjunktiv II appears.
Indikativ vs. Konjunktiv II
The difference between the two moods is not about tense. It is about reality. Indikativ says what is true or what happened. Konjunktiv II says what would be true, or what someone wishes were true.
| Indikativ (real) | Konjunktiv II (hypothetical) |
|---|---|
| Ich habeZeit. | Ich hätteZeit. |
| Er ist hier. | Er wäre hier. |
| Sie kann kommen. | Sie könnte kommen. |
| Wir lernenDeutsch. | Wir würden Deutschlernen. |
The shift from Indikativ to Konjunktiv II is always a shift in reality status. The sentence moves from fact to hypothesis.
The key forms
Konjunktiv II has its own forms for every verb, but learners only need a small core set. These are the forms that appear most often and cannot comfortably be replaced with würden.
| Verb | ich | du | er/sie/es | wir | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| sein | wäre | wärst | wäre | wären | would be |
| haben | hätte | hättest | hätte | hätten | would have |
| können | könnte | könntest | könnte | könnten | could |
| müssen | müsste | müsstest | müsste | müssten | would have to |
| dürfen | dürfte | dürftest | dürfte | dürften | would be allowed to |
| sollen | sollte | solltest | sollte | sollten | should / ought to |
For every other verb, use würden + Infinitiv. That covers the rest without needing to learn individual forms.
For the full würden article with forms and all three uses: würden. The Konjunktiv II tool.
wäre: the most used form
wäre is the Konjunktiv II of sein. It appears constantly, including in expressions where English uses "would be", "it would be", and "if I were."
- Das wäre toll. (That would be great.)
- Ich wäre gern dabei. (I would love to be there.)
- Es wäre besser, wenn du käm(e)st. (It would be better if you came.)
- Wäre das möglich? (Would that be possible?)
hätte: possession in the hypothetical
hätte is the Konjunktiv II of haben. It is used wherever haben would appear in an Indikativ sentence, now shifted into the hypothetical.
- Ich hättegern einen Kaffee. (I would like a coffee.) The most common polite order in a café.
- Wir hättenmehr Zeit, wenn wir früher kommen würden. (We would have more time if we came earlier.)
- Hättest du eineIdee? (Would you have an idea?)
könnte / müsste: modal verbs in Konjunktiv II
Most modal verbs have their own Konjunktiv II forms built by adding an umlaut to the Präteritum stem. könnte means "could" or "might." müsste means "would have to" or "should." Two exceptions: sollen and wollen take no umlaut, so their Konjunktiv II is identical to their Präteritum: sollte and wollte for both.
- Du könntest früher kommen. (You could come earlier.)
- Ich könnte dirhelfen. (I could help you.)
- Er müsste eigentlich wissen, was zu tun ist. (He really ought to know what to do.)
- Wir müssten mehr üben. (We would have to practice more.)
Unreal conditions with wenn
Konjunktiv II is the mood for unreal conditional sentences. The wenn clause names the impossible or imagined condition. The main clause shows what would follow. Both clauses use Konjunktiv II.
| wenn clause (condition) | Main clause (result) |
|---|---|
| Wenn ich Zeithätte, | würde ich reisen. |
| Wenn du hier wärst, | würden wir zusammen lernen. |
| Wenn er früher kommen könnte, | würden wir beginnen. |
The wenn clause typically uses a direct Konjunktiv II form (hätte, wäre, könnte). The main clause often uses würden + Infinitiv. Both clauses can also use würden + Infinitiv, but the direct forms sound more natural in the wenn clause.
Wishes with ich wäre / ich hätte
Wishes introduced by wenn follow the same pattern. They are unreal conditions with only the condition, and no result clause needed.
- Wenn ich nur mehr Zeithätte! (If only I had more time!)
- Wenn das nur wahr wäre! (If only that were true!)
- Wenn ich nur dieAntwort wüsste! (If only I knew the answer!)
Konjunktiv II shifts sentences from real to hypothetical. The core forms to know → wäre (sein), hätte (haben), könnte (können), müsste (müssen). For everything else → würden + Infinitiv. Unreal conditions use Konjunktiv II in both the wenn clause and the result clause.
