deshalb. That's why. The verb stays.

deshalb means "therefore" or "that's why." It states a consequence. And unlike weil, it does not touch the verb's position. The verb stays exactly where it always sits.

The contrast that matters

Both weil and deshalb connect a reason to a result. The meaning is similar. The grammar is completely different.

weil introduces the reason and sends the verb to the very end of its clause. deshalb introduces the result and leaves the verb in position 2, as normal. It is an adverb, not a conjunction.

ExampleVerb position
weil..., weil ich müde bin.End of clause
deshalbDeshalb gehe ich nach Hause.Position 2 (normal)

Same idea, two different structures

Here is the same thought expressed with weil and then with deshalb. Notice how the word order shifts.

With weilWith deshalb
Ich gehe nach Hause, weil ich müde bin. Ich bin müde. Deshalb gehe ich nach Hause.
Er lernt Deutsch, weil er in Berlin arbeitet. Er arbeitet in Berlin. Deshalb lernt er Deutsch.
Sie fährt nicht, weil dasAuto kaputt ist. DasAuto ist kaputt. Deshalb fährt sie nicht.

With weil, reason and result sit in one sentence separated by a comma. With deshalb, the reason comes first as its own sentence, and deshalb opens the next one.

deshalb at the front: inversion

When deshalb takes position 1, the verb must follow immediately in position 2. The subject moves behind the verb. This is the same rule as with dann: anything in position 1 that is not the subject causes subject and verb to swap.

Position 1Verb (pos. 2)SubjectRest
Deshalbgeheichnach Hause.
DeshalblernterDeutsch.
Deshalbfährtsienicht.
Deshalbhabenwirgewartet.

weil: reason inside the sentence, verb moves to the end.
deshalb: result opens the next sentence, verb stays in position 2.

Three words, same rule

deshalb, deswegen, and darum all mean the same thing and follow the same rule. The verb always stays in position 2. You can use them interchangeably in most situations. deshalb is the most common in written German; deswegen is very natural in speech.

WordExample
deshalbDeshalb lerne ich jeden Tag.
deswegenDeswegen lerne ich jeden Tag.
darumDarum lerne ich jeden Tag.

deshalb in the middle of a sentence

deshalb does not have to open the sentence. It can also sit in a middle position, after the verb. The word order stays completely normal.

SubjectVerbdeshalbRest
Ichgehedeshalbfrüh schlafen.
Erhatdeshalbnicht geantwortet.
Wirsinddeshalbzu Hause geblieben.

The verb-last rule that deshalb avoids: weil. The verb goes last. The same inversion rule with dann: dann. Then. What comes next.
